Comparative hermeneutics is one of the essential and innovative approaches in understanding the interpretive and explanatory dimensions of the thoughts of Qur'anic exegetes. This article examines the foundations, methods, and interpretive orientations of Imam Khomeini and Ayatollah Khamenei through a comparative analysis. The primary research question focuses on the methodologies, orientations, and similarities and differences in the interpretations of these two scholars regarding Surah al-Hamd (The Opening Chapter). Additionally, it explores how these interpretations can enhance a deeper understanding of the Qur'an and its application in individual and social life.
The research methodology is based on an analytical-comparative approach, utilizing the writings and speeches of Imam Khomeini and comparing them with the exegesis of Ayatollah Khamenei. The findings indicate that both scholars have employed a comprehensive ijtihadi (independent reasoning) method of interpretation, which integrates the Qur'an, Sunnah (traditions), and reason. However, Imam Khomeini's interpretation exhibits a more pronounced mystical (‘irfan) orientation, while Ayatollah Khamenei's interpretation emphasizes social dimensions.
This study elucidates the shared principles and distinctions in the hermeneutical approaches of contemporary Shiite leaders, contributing significantly to a deeper comprehension of Qur'anic interpretation and its practical implications for individual and societal life. By highlighting these similarities and differences, the article provides valuable insights into the application of Qur'anic teachings in modern contexts, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical exegesis and practical implementation
